Among the early products of the two glass furnaces that were built in the initial weeks at Pilchuck Glass School were a series of clear biomorphic bulbs of glass blown by Chihuly toward the end of the summer. These ovals of glass were taken out to a nearby pond, floated on the surface, and photographed by the artist Buster Simpson. The floats, like the pond, disappeared by the end of the summer.
Such impromptu, site-specific projects set the tone of the first summers at Pilchuck and continued to push studio glass away from vessels toward more experimental and conceptual works. Recalling Chihuly's childhood fascination with the blue-green Japanese fishnet floats, these floating forms can now be seen as simple precursors of Chihuly's recent Floats.
