| Jack Lenor Larsen, a great friend and mentor,
played an essential role in the founding of Pilchuck. A native of
Washington, he introduced me to John and Anne G. Hauberg, who became
cofounders of the school and its earliest patrons. So when Jack
asked me to do an outdoor exhibition in the gardens at LongHouse
for the public, we were ready to go. We’d just been working in Finland
and had developed many new forms, and this was the first chance
to show them. What a setting: I filled the gardens with Fiddleheads,
Black Saguaros, Tepees, Red Reeds, Seal Pups; hung chandeliers from
trees; and set a boat filled with glass on the pond. |
