After CHIHULY OVER VENICE, Team Chihuly was used to going on the road. Taking on the challenges and chances of working new environments hand in hand with craftsmen and artisans in other countries only enhanced our work as a team. Factories in Finland, Mexico, Ireland, and this one in Vianne, France, gave us opportunities to work with new glass (not all glass is the same), new techniques, and new colors (some factories work with “pots” of colored glass as a base, while we work at The Boathouse with clear and apply color).
Vianne is a beautiful medieval village near Bordeaux in the southwest of France. We took the glass we made out of the factory and into the town, making about a dozen installations all around the area. We made some great glass at the factory and shipped it home by sea. Unfortunately, a storm blew our container into the Atlantic Ocean. Somewhere down there the fish are swimming amongst thousands of pieces of my glass from Vianne.
