Chihuly had turned this place into an encampment with a curious strategy. Unlike the medieval crusaders and other occupiers of this fortress, Dale was here to encourage an invasion. The sculptures - and over my shoulder, welders clothed like knights in armor were putting the finishing touches on the most massive piece, the Crystal Mountain - were being installed for the delight of visitors rather than the defense of the fortress. On opening night, expecting 1,500 people to flood into the courtyard, we were overwhelmed when 2,500 gently invaded. In battle, the odds are measured by us against them, and superior forces have the edge. In Chihulyland, it's the opposite: Chihuly succeeds when he is overwhelmed.
