Chihuly at RISD
Providence, Rhode Island
September 23, 2008 – January 4, 2009
Dale went to the Rhode Island School of Design on September 23, 2008 to open Chihuly at RISD, the inaugural exhibition at the museum’s new Chace Center designed by architect Jose’ Rafael Moneo. The show will be open until January 4, 2009. Chihuly, a RISD alum and former professor, was thrilled with the opportunity to visit his old stomping grounds on the occasion of the opening. The work of a number of Dale’s former students is also being showcased in an adjacent exhibition, Studio Glass in Rhode Island: The Chihuly Years.

Chihuly at the de Young

Chihuly at the de Young closed to the public on September 28, 2008. 406,433 visitors toured the exhibition since its opening weekend in June. The de Young Museum staff and all of the people at Chihuly Studio who worked on putting this show together can feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment given the tremendous public support it received.

The Chihuly Collection at The Arts Center
St. Petersburg, Florida
September 26, 2008
Dale went to St. Petersburg, Florida to celebrate the ground-breaking of the Beth Ann Morean Arts Center on Friday, September 26, 2008. When construction is completed on this new 32,000 square-foot wing at The Arts Center in Spring 2010, a site specific collection of Chihuly artwork will be featured.

Chihuly: The Nature of Glass
Phoenix, Arizona
November 22, 2008 – May 31, 2009
The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona will host the ninth garden & glass exhibition of Dale Chihuly artwork. Chihuly: The Nature of Glass will be the first Chihuly garden show to take place in an outdoor desert environment and will include new and existing work. The show opens on November 22, 2008 and will be on view until May 31, 2009.

Tacoma, Washington

On view in the north gallery at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington is the Laguna Murano Chandelier. This Chandelier was created by Chihuly on the island of Murano in 1996 when he worked with both Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra as part of the culmination of the “Chihuly Over Venice” project. On view through April 19, 2009, this installation is on loan from the George R. Stroemple Collection.

Seymour Botanical Conservatory
Tacoma, Washington
November 15, 2008 – February 15, 2009
Located in Dale’s hometown of Tacoma, Washington is the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory in Wright Park, which will showcase an intimate Chihuly installation from November 15, 2008 to February 15, 2009 in celebration of their 100-year anniversary. This conservatory is one of three Victorian-style conservatories on the West Coast, and it is one of Dale’s favorites. When Dale was a child, his mom, Viola Chihuly, used to take the family to visit this conservatory. During these trips, Dale first fell in love with glass houses and conservatories. He is honored to be able to give back to the Seymour Botanical Conservatory, which has delighted so many visitors over the last 100 years.

The Glass Experience
Chicago, Illinois

The Museum of Science and Industry hosted The Glass Experience from March 13 to September 1, 2008 in Chicago, Illinois. The show looked at glass broadly as an historical medium that has propelled innovation and discovery across the globe. Dale’s contribution to the show was a Macchia Forest and some early Macchia from his collection. He was pleased to be able to participate in a unique exhibition, which reached a new audience interested in the science and history of glass. More than 130,000 visitors saw the show.

Jellies: Living Art at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey, California
On view through September, 14th 2008
Dale is very fortunate to have been able to show his work at an institution he has long admired. Over the course of the last six and a half years, more than 10 million visitors have viewed Chihuly’s Seaform installation on loan to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Supporters of the aquarium gathered for a special celebration to say goodbye to the show, which had brought so much pleasure to visitors.

Dale Chihuly: Seaforms at The Columbia Museum of Art
Columbia, South Carolina
On view through November 30, 2008
Chihuly’s Seaform show has travelled around the country since 1996 to places as far flung as Portland, Maine, Tallahassee, Florida, Santa Ana, California, and Washington, DC. It is currently on view in Columbia, South Carolina, where it will remain until November 30, 2008. There are 24 sets and 15 drawings in the show. The Seaform series is one of Chihuly’s oldest series, and he enjoys the opportunity to share this work with new audiences.

Wrapped in Tradition: The Chihuly Collection of American Indian Trade Blankets

Diane Farris Gallery

This fall, the Diane Farris Gallery in Vancouver, Canada is exhibiting selected works from Dale's new Black series. The show includes Chihuly’s Black Baskets, Macchia, Cylinders and Drawings

The Gallery will also participate in the launch of Dale's new 208-page hardcover publication called Chihuly Black.

Founded in 1984, Diane Farris Gallery was recently voted #1 Best Private Art Gallery by Georgia Straight readers in the 13th Annual Best of Vancouver Reader's poll (+120,000 voters).

Marlborough Gallery
Madrid, Spain
October 16 – November 15 2008
Opening on October 16, 2008, Marlborough Gallery Madrid will host its first one-man exhibition of Chihuly work in Spain. Dale and Leslie Chihuly will attend the gala opening with other invited guests, including King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, Manuel Borja Villel, director of the Reina Sofia, and the President of Caja Espana from the Castilla-Leon region.

The exhibition is composed of more than 70 vibrant and colorful works including Lime Green Poly Vitro Tower. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Victor Niedo Alcaide will accompany the exhibition. Alcaide is a devotee of historical European stained glass windows. He is an acclaimed historian and member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Arts.

This exhibition of Chihuly works at Marlborough Madrid represents the continued commitment of the Marlborough Gallery to present Chihuly internationally.

SOFA Chicago, Holsten Galleries

This year Dale will be featured at SOFA Chicago by Holsten Galleries of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Holsten has represented Dale's work for nearly 30 years and has received repeated acclaim for his presentation of Chihuly’s work at this annual expo of contemporary sculpture and studio art glass. Chihuly will show some of his newest works, including Tabac Baskets, Burnt Black Drawings, and Clear Cylinders. He will also show two chandeliers: Amber Frog Foot Chandelier and Sapphire and Goldleaf Chandelier. A catalogue featuring many of the available works has been prepared.

New Orleans, Louisiana
On view through October 18, 2008
Works from the Black Series are on view at the Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans, including Cylinders, Soft Cylinders, Putti, and large Basket. The show features three Chandeliers, including the Lamp Black and Chrysalis Chandelier, 2008 and Aventurine Green Chandelier, 2008. Also included are two large Canvas Drawings and 30 drawings on paper.

Seniors Making Art

Seniors Making Art will host its 13th Annual Gala on October 25, 2008 at the Bellevue Westin. Dale founded this organization in 1991, and it has been a great thrill for him to watch the organization grow and evolve into what it is today. Dale has always treasured spending time with older people. He feels saddened that so many talented and inspirational older people do not have opportunities to share their stories and express their talents and creativity as they should. SMA provides professional art instruction in the form of 8-week classes free of charge to seniors. To date SMA offers approximately 108 programs in 14 states. Pilchuck Auction

Pilchuck Glass School of Stanwood, Washington will host its 30th Annual Auction on October 30, 2008 to raise funds for this internationally renowned school. Through a unique opportunity from Nordstrom, Dale Chihuly, who is one of Pilchuck’s founders, was able to raise awareness for the school by creating a window installation for Nordstrom’s downtown Seattle flagship store on 6th Avenue. Dale and Leslie Chihuly were pleased to unveil Blue Reeds and Floats for a September cultivation event at the store, where Dale signed books for all of the guests. If you can’t attend the gala, there are a number of other opportunities in which to participate and to view the work of the amazing artists who have attended Pilchuck and who are making their work available for sale to help support the school.

Chihuly Book Signing Event
Bellagio, Las Vegas, Nevada
October 11, 2008
Dale signed copies of his latest book, Chihuly Black, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The oversized, leather-bound, 208-page publication includes 138 color photographs of Dale’s elegant Black series and an essay by Barbara Rose, Black is the Color. A short essay by Dale, Burned Drawings, introduces his most recent series of drawings, which use torch flame, metal shavings, and iridescent paint colors as part of his creative process. The book’s official release date is Fall 2008 and will be available in most bookstores.
