Chihuly Garden and Glass

After a week of opening events that brought members of the Seattle community through the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition, a dedication ceremony took place on May 21. During the ceremony, Executive Director Michelle Bufano, Space Needle Chairman Jeff Wright, Seattle’s Mayor McGinn and Dale and Leslie Chihuly spoke. The presentation concluded with Chihuly signing a beam in the Glasshouse. He thanked the Wright family for providing the opportunity to have this exhibition of his artwork in his hometown region. The exhibition includes the Exhibition Hall, Glasshouse, Garden, Bookstore and Collections Café, and is now open to the public.

Chihuly at the Dallas Arboretum

The first week of May, Dale, Leslie and Team Chihuly attended opening events for the Chihuly at the Dallas Arboretum exhibition. Fifteen installations and the garden are on view daily with extended hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during Chihuly Nights.

Dale and Leslie had the opportunity to appear with Good Morning America anchor Sam Champion to talk about the exhibition. Watch the local segment on WFAA.

Bluebeard’s Castle with the Seattle Symphony

Under the direction of Gerard Schwarz, the Seattle Symphony performed the concert version of Bartok’s one-act opera featuring a set design by Chihuly. The set, comprised of seven doors, were first presented in the opera’s Seattle debut at Benaroya Hall in 2007 and has since traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tennessee and Tel Aviv, Israel for a total of 15 performances.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond will host Chihuly at VMFA opening in October. The 12,000-square-foot temporary exhibition space will include early and new artwork as well as site specific installations created for the atrium and reflecting pools of the McGlothlin Wing.

Halcyon Gallery

After a successful run, Chihuly's show at Halcyon Gallery closed on April 21. He was featured on the BBC and a host of other media, drawing thousands to see the show while it was on view. This was Halcyon's first show with Chihuly and the launch of its new location on New Bond Street. In addition, the Torchlight Chandelier is on view in Park Lane until fall 2012.

Talley Dunn Gallery

Talley Dunn Gallery opened its Chihuly exhibition on May 12 featuring recent White works, two Chandeliers and a Fiori installation. Also included are a White Persian Tower, colorful Blanket Cylinders and Drawings. The show is on display throughout the summer in concert with Chihuly at the Dallas Arboretum.

Sandra Ainsley Gallery

Sandra Ainsley Gallery is celebrating the official opening of its new gallery space in Toronto with an exhibition of Chihuly's work. In the beautiful new location, Sandra Ainsley will present a collection of works from Chihuly's Black, Silvered and White series. The show will have two Chandeliers and a grouped display of Silvered Jerusalem Cylinders.

Drammens Museum

Drammen, Norway

The Drammens Museum in Norway commissioned a Chandelier, which is being installed in a museum stairwell adjacent to a traditional chandelier. The Chandelier design is inspired by the space and will be a complement to the museum’s existing chandelier and is Chihuly’s first permanent installation in Norway.

Google Talk, live stream

On Monday, April 23, Dale, Leslie and Chihuly Garden and Glass Executive Director Michelle Bufano joined Google Vice President Marissa Mayer for a Google Talk. They offered Marissa and Google employees a sneak peek at the Seattle Center exhibition. The event was live streamed on YouTube and you can view the talk and Chihuly’s previous Google Talk from 2008 at the links below.

Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) award

Since 2009, Chihuly has created the Piccolo Venetian with Silvered Onyx Leaf award for individuals honored at SIFF’s tribute dinner. This year, SIFF is celebrating Sissy Spacek and William Friedkin. Congratulations to this year’s recipients!

Chihuly created this year's award for the Royal Polo Match. Sponsored by Halcyon Gallery of London, this annual Charity Match pits the Royal Polo Team against the top team in the UK. The Sunset Boat was on display during the match.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art Lecture and Book Signing

On Sunday, June 24, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art hosted a lecture and book signing with Chihuly. He spoke about his career and showed video highlights. This year, Oklahoma City Museum of Art celebrates its 10-year anniversary.

For the fourth year in a row, Chihuly has created artwork to commemorate the Sounders friendly matches. This year, he created the Blue Lion Spire for the Chelsea match on July 18. Dale and Leslie are proud supporters of the Seattle Sounders and attend games regularly with their son Jackson.

CHIHULY HISTORY

40 Years Ago

Rondel Door, 1972

Chihuly and James Carpenter completed Rondel Door utilizing lead and blown glass. The door was included in the exhibition American Glass Now, which traveled to the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning New York; Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York; Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Art and Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California.

Portland Press

 

Portland Press will soon be called Chihuly Workshop! Since 1992, Portland Press and Chihuly have worked together to design and produce Studio Editions, Limited Edition Prints, publications and other merchandise speaking to his work and career. Becoming Chihuly Workshop, it continues to realize the artist’s vision in producing his designs. This fall, we launch our new website - www.chihulyworkshop.com - where you will find everything this creative relationship has produced.
