Initially I thought my glass would have a major influence on the Pelléas et Mélisande opera sets, but as it turned out it was just the opposite. I thought I would make some glass trees on a smaller scale by blowing the glass into molds made out of cedar bark. They looked amazingly like the opera trees, with their iridescent, haunting surfaces of translucent and transparent glass.   —Chihuly
