Aqua Blue Macchia

2012 Chihuly Workshop Studio Edition

Aqua Blue Macchia

6 x 7 x 8"

Vibrating with color, Aqua Blue Macchia is a brilliant example of Chihuly’s wildly colorful Macchia series.

Cool turquoise meets mischievous orange. Deep indigo “jimmies,” small chips of colored glass, are scattered across the turquoise exterior, adding depth and dimension. The ripples and folds of the graceful slumping form are induced by gravity and further emphasize the dynamic orange core of the Macchia. A chartreuse lip wrap accentuates the unique color palette of the piece.

Every year, Chihuly creates four Studio Editions, representing Chihuly’s most distinctive series. As every piece is handblown, your artwork may vary slightly in size, color, and shape. Small blemishes or imperfections in the glass are part of the glass blowing process and add to the individual characteristics of each piece.

Includes Chihuly Macchia, a compact hardcover book with a DVD and essay by Davira S. Taragin on the historical and aesthetic contexts of this series.

Additional Insights

Originally nicknamed the “uglies” by Chihuly’s mother because of its unusual and unorthodox colors, the Macchia series became a platform for the artist to experiment with the endless variations and capabilities of color in the medium of glass.

Chihuly’s refined sense of unique color combinations continues to delight and amaze us in this extraordinary series.
