Brandywine Macchia

2013 Chihuly Workshop Studio Edition

Brandywine Macchia

7 x 11 x 8"

This Brandywine Macchia is a quintessential example of Chihuly’s passion for exploring and experimenting with color.

The base element, golden-colored on the outside, features a gently rolled lip exposing the deep purple interior of the Macchia. Flecks of blue and red along the exterior and a rich teal lip wrap add further contrast and dimension capturing the sculpture’s graceful undulations. The intricately detailed interior element extends the intimate dialogue between color and form that is at the heart of this work.

Every year, Chihuly creates four Studio Editions, representing Chihuly’s most distinctive series. As every piece is handblown, your artwork may vary slightly in size, color, and shape. Small blemishes or imperfections in the glass are part of the glass blowing process and add to the individual characteristics of each piece.

Includes Chihuly Macchia, a compact hardcover book with a DVD and essay by Davira S. Taragin on the historical and aesthetic contexts of this series.

“When we unloaded the ovens in the morning, there was a rush of seeing something I had never seen before.”

Additional Insights

Embracing the spirit of experimentation, Chihuly aimed to work with all 300 colors available in his hotshop to create the Macchia series.

Chihuly created a unique process that allowed him to contrast the interior and exterior colors of the Macchia without them blending—a predominant characteristic of this vibrant series.
