Summary

    Double Time

Double Time showcases the color and momentum that has become a marquee aspect of Chihuly’s Work on Paper.

Using the lithography process, metallic blue, gold, and black are overlaid across a brushed red intaglio background. Several applications of turquoise and green handwork are added to the interior of the Basket drawing as well as a striking lime green lip wrap. Double Time is signed by Dale Chihuly in a bright gold acrylic paint.

    Additional Insights

Chihuly began his Baskets series early in his career after seeing a collection of Northwest Coast Indian baskets at Tacoma’s Washington State History Museum. The baskets had begun to collapse from age, displaying waves and ripples along the upper edge of their forms. This asymmetrical rippling, along with the fragility of Northwest Coast Indian baskets, became central components in Chihuly’s development of his glass Baskets series, which has become more and more vibrant over time.
