Chihuly and Seattle Sounders FC Present the National Spire to U.S. Men’s National Team

National Spire, 2013

This evening, during a halftime ceremony, Chihuly will present the National Spire to Sunil Gulati, president of the United States Soccer Federation.

To celebrate his relationship with the Seattle Sounders FC, he has created the National Spire – from his Venetian series – to commemorate this world cup qualifier game against Panama.

In 1988, inspired by Italian Art Deco, Chihuly started the Venetian series with Italian glassblower Lino Tagliapietra. In 1993, the series developed further into smaller Venetians, the Piccolo Venetians.

Since 2009, Chihuly has created artwork prior to each Sounders international friendly; representatives from the opposing team are presented with artwork celebrating their visit to Seattle. With no international friendly match scheduled this year, Dale is honored to present artwork to the National team.
