Dale and Leslie Chihuly Tour "Chihuly Merletto" at Traver Gallery

On June 4 of this year, Chihuly Studio and Traver Gallery in Seattle, Washington, proudly opened the exhibition, Chihuly Merletto, which will run through August 1. While global health concerns prevented the gallery from welcoming the Seattle community into its physical space, this video tour, featuring Dale and Leslie Chihuly, offers an intimate view of the innovative new works on display.

The exhibition presents Chihuly’s latest works in glass, as well as the drawings that guided his creative process and acted as the inspiration for this collection, also titled Chihuly Merletto. The genesis for these new works lies in Chihuly’s admiration of the ancient caneworking technique called merletto (the Italian word for lace), which was developed on the Italian island of Murano in the 15th century. A labor-intensive and complex process, Chihuly took this technique and added a stunning modern twist of expressive energy and movement to the mesh-like patterns. His first foray into the process integrates opaque white cane to his iconic Basket series and references early Basket Drawings which Chihuly created with bundles of pencils to capture the three-dimensional form on paper.

Dale and Leslie Chihuly are thrilled to be partnering with Traver Gallery for this exhibition of Chihuly Merletto and hope you enjoy the tour.
