Columbus Symphony Orchestra's "Chihuly Festival" Presentation of "Bluebeard's Castle"

PBS's Columbus, Ohio affiliate, WOSU, recently went behind-the-scenes as Columbus Symphony Orchestra staged Béla Bartók's iconic opera thriller Bluebeard's Castle featuring dramatic sets created in glass by Chihuly. The production, which ran on February 28 and 29, was met with rave reviews, with a Columbus Dispatch writer stating, "Chihuly’s glass art must also be considered a character every bit as involved in the action as are the set and the singers."

Columbus Symphony Orchestra is the latest to present this combination of works by Bartok and Chihuly, but the idea can actually be traced back to Seattle Symphony Orchestra, who first staged the concept in 2007. With thirty-plus performances presented in nine cities around the world, the blown-glass stage design and linguistic stylings of the singers still shock and excite audiences.
