Dale Chihuly, a lifelong cinema lover, has supported the Palm Springs International Film Festival for the past 15 of its 35 years by providing the artwork presented to select festival honorees. The Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils that is presented to each year’s most impactful film artists has become nearly synonymous with the festival itself.

“I love cinema,” he says, “and when I’m not working, I spend a lot of time watching films—both classics and current material. I’ve often thought that I might have liked to be a director. I imagine it’s like the way I work with my team to create a composition.”

This year’s festival kicked off on January 4 with The Film Awards Gala, celebrating a milestone 35 years of cultivating and promoting the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness. The Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils has been presented to film icons such as Martin Scorsese, Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, Cate Blanchett, Spike Lee, and Willem Dafoe. This year’s recipients include:

  • Career Achievement Award: Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction

  • Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress: Emma Stone, Poor Things

The Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils is an unmistakably Chihuly reimagining of classic Italian art deco vases and belongs to his Venetian series. Chihuly began developing this body of work in 1988 with fellow glass maestro Lino Tagliapietra. Featuring classical, symmetrical vessel and incorporating bright colors and otherworldly, often humorous details, Venetians—like the Palm Springs International Film Festival—celebrates breathing fresh life into an established form.
