Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Chihuly Over Venice
The landmark 1996 project Chihuly Over Venice was a proving ground for the team model of glassblowing Chihuly first encountered there in 1968 as both the first American and Fulbright fellow working at the famous Venini glass factory. When he returned as a mature artist with his monumental Chandeliers over the canals and palazzos of Venice, he came back having fully embraced this method, presenting experimental work created collaboratively by teams in the United States, Finland, Ireland, and Mexico.
To celebrate Chihuly Over Venice and its 30th anniversary exhibition CHIHULY: Venice 2026, we present a curated selection of Chihuly works created between 1995–98.

This curated selection of works brings together rare pedestal works and original Drawings from the prolific and exuberant period surrounding Chihuly Over Venice. They reflect the approaches Chihuly developed in each Chihuly Over Venice location: In Finland, artwork within the landscape; in Ireland, elaborate, lyrical forms; in Mexico, silvered glass; and finally in Venice, a conversation between tradition and experimentation.

“I have always believed that teamwork was the heart of glassblowing and I felt this project would provide an opportunity for me to prove this theory on a grand scale. The common language that exists among glassblowers is unique and . . . worthy of exploration. It would be a grand collaboration intended to break down any existing barriers and secrets, culminating in the most secretive and mysterious city and the glass capital of the world—Venice.”
