Chihuly found inspiration in the handloomed rug and blanket designs of the Diné (Navajo) tribe during a visit to New Mexico in 1974. He experimented with drawings on glass vessels using a process informed by his background in weaving, fusing colorful glass threads in intricate designs to vessels in a molten state. Chihuly’s Blanket Cylinders, which debuted in 1975, are reflective of Chihuly’s appreciation for Native American cultures and their influence on contemporary art.
