What inspires Chihuly’s distinctive style?

Chihuly is inspired to push the limits of an unconventional medium, massing bold color into large-scale, often asymmetrical forms shaped by heat and gravity. Drawing from his early background in interior design, Chihuly’s composition and placement of his installations reflect a designer’s eye for space and lighting.

Additionally, his upbringing near the Puget Sound infuses his work with a wild, marine sensibility and a clear influence from nature, while his journeys throughout North America, Europe, and elsewhere have shaped not only his passion for the practice and history of glassblowing, but also have informed his embrace of the Venetian team approach to glassblowing.
