Chihuly Artwork Commissioned for Mount Holyoke’s Library Atrium

Clear and Gold Tower, 2013

Clear and Gold Tower, 2013

This week, Team Chihuly is on site at Mount Holyoke installing a newly-commissioned artwork.

The Clear and Gold Tower is inspired by Chihuly’s Palazzo Ducale Tower, which was created during the 1995-1996 Chihuly Over Venice project. For Mount Holyoke, he has created the Clear and Gold Tower, comprised of more than 450 pieces of hand-blown clear glass shimmering with 24-karat gold. The sculpture is mounted with its base inside a Venetian well-head so that the tower proper stands 12-feet tall over the well.

The college is hosting a celebration on Tuesday, September 3 in the library atrium. The artwork dedication takes place in conjunction with the college’s celebration: The Next 175 Years. The alumna who donated funds has done so as a gift from the Centennial Class of 1937.
