Chihuly’s Art Presented to Recipients of 34th Palm Springs International Film Festival

For the last 14 years, Chihuly, a lifetime lover of cinema, has created awards for the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) which are given to acclaimed filmmakers and performers in nine special categories. This year’s recipients of Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils are:

• Chairman's Award: Viola Davis for The Woman King 

• International Star Award, Actress: Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once

• Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress: Cate Blanchett for Tár

• Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor: Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin

• International Star Award, Actor: Bill Nighy for Living

• Creative Impact in Writing: Rian Johnson for Glass Onion

• Creative Impact in Directing: Baz Luhrmann for Elvis

• Creative Impact in Acting: Angela Bassett for Black Panther

• Creative Impact in Breakthrough Performance: Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway

Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils is from Chihuly's Venetian series, a body of work he began developing in 1988 with Italian glassblower and friend, Lino Tagliapietra. Drawing inspiration from classical Venetian Art Deco vases which often featured handles, muted colors, and symmetrical structures, Chihuly was inspired to reimagine the form, incorporating other-worldly, often humorous, details and bold colors. Each Venetian, including Gilded Emerald Piccolo Venetian with Sunburst Coils, has a character of its own.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival honors achievements in film and filmmaking. This year’s event included screenings of 134 films from 64 countries and kicked off the celebration with an award ceremony which honored acclaimed filmmakers and performers. The festival - which celebrated its 34th anniversary this year - continues to exemplify its mission of "cultivating and promoting the art and science of film through education and cross-cultural awareness."
