Chihuly is no stranger to London, as one of the notable artists with public work on view in the city. From the iconic V&A Chandelier (2001) at the Victoria and Albert Museum, to Amber and Gold Chandelier (2014) at Harrods London, to two separate exhibitions at UNESCO World Heritage Site Kew Gardens, Chihuly and London—and the artist’s passion for public access to art—go back decades.
Chihuly at Chelsea Barracks, a new selection of outdoor installations unveiled this spring, is the artist’s latest project that invites neighbors and the general public to experience a moment of surprise and discovery in London’s urban surroundings. The selection of works includes Electric Yellow and Deep Coral Tower (2017) and Aqua Blue and Amber Chandelier (2011), alongside two all-new installations: Amethyst Reeds (2024) and Mulberry Square Fiori (2024). Presented by Chelsea Barracks, a development in the historic Belgravia district, in partnership with London Craft week and public art and cultural placemaking agency New Public, Chihuly at Chelsea Barracks debuted as part of London Craft Week’s inaugural “Modern Masters” program, which highlights the work of contemporary artists who push the boundaries of their medium.
Within Chelsea Barracks is Garrison Chapel, a historic and lovingly restored 1850s church that now hosts art exhibitions through The King’s Foundation. Through May 26, the chapel housed a vibrant collection of original pedestal works presented alongside the four outdoor installations featured throughout Chelsea Barracks. Visitors were invited to explore the art in this serene indoor space, as well as the grand-scale installations outside, situated among sparkling fountains, stands of alliums, and vibrant green spaces.
Together, these two free-of-charge exhibitions emphasize not only Chihuly’s deep connection to London, but his passion for making art accessible to all.
Chihuly at Chelsea Barracks is on view until October 2024.
