The city of Venice has always been one of Chihuly’s most important influences, and when he reprised his partnership with The Rug Company for a new luxury collection launching this fall, his connection to the city’s iconic architecture and waterways became the backdrop for the launch.
Chihuly’s second collection with The Rug Company since 2020, Masterpieces II comprises four stunning, hand-knotted designs: Coho, Oyster, Scallop, and River, which are adapted from loose, fluid details found in his Persians, Macchia, and Cylinders works. They reflect the aquatic themes that defined his upbringing in the Pacific Northwest and his artistic evolution in Venice.

Chihuly first visited Venice on a Fulbright scholarship in 1968, where he first encountered the team approach to glassblowing at the renowned Venini Fabrica. He returned in 1996 with Chihuly Over Venice, a tribute to the city that shaped him as an artist and glassblower. The Rug Company’s launch of the new collection not only retraces his steps through Venice, but also explores the connection between time-honored traditions and contemporary aesthetics—a major theme of Chihuly’s work and The Rug Company’s ethos. And though Chihuly is best known for his work in glass, one of his earliest artistic endeavors as an undergraduate was in weaving, making rugs a natural medium for interpreting his designs.

Spotlighting the premium materials and exceptional quality of these luxe, hand-woven designs, the collection debuted last week at the Monaco Yacht Show. Alongside four original Drawings with complementary hues of blue and gray, attendees got a first look at the collection.

Like Chihuly’s installations, these designs are more than just rugs—they are a conversation between an object and the space it occupies. A space’s character, lighting, décor, and scale are part of the conversation—whether that conversation takes place between a rug and a living room, or a Chandelier and a Venetian palazzo.
