Three Chihuly Documentaries Make Their Streaming Debut on IndieFlix

Documentaries available on IndieFlix

Beginning September 27, 2019, documentary-centered streaming service IndieFlix will offer three well-known documentaries about Dale Chihuly on its platform, including “Chihuly in the Hotshop,” “Chihuly Outside,” and “Chihuly Fire & Light.” This marks the U.S. streaming debut of these award-winning films, which were previously available only through airings on PBS affiliates via American Public Television or for purchase through Chihuly Workshop.

Emmy-award winning “Chihuly in the Hotshop” is set in 2006, at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington. The museum invited Chihuly to work in its state-of-the-art hotshop, with an amphitheater specifically designed to allow the audience to watch the action close at hand. This residency inspired the documentary which aims to capture the essence of Chihuly’s work in glass over the previous 30 years. The 90-minute film was released in 2007 and features music from the band Tom Tom Club.

“Chihuly Outside” places Chihuly’s work within the broader context of contemporary art through the lens of his acclaimed Garden Cycle. Beginning with Chihuly's early experiments floating glass on water and incorporating ice and neon into large-scale installations, the film culminates with the artist's decade-long cycle of exhibitions at preeminent botanical gardens. Released in 2012, this 58-minute film features music from REM and the Talking Heads.

“Chihuly Fire & Light” invites viewers to observe Chihuly’s exploration of the glass medium and the complex process of mounting a grand-scale exhibition. The film features highlights from the 2008 exhibit “Chihuly at The de Young,” set at San Francisco’s de Young Museum, which was viewed by more than 400,000 people. “Chihuly Fire & Light” was released in 2010, is 58-minutes long, and features music from The Talking Heads and Joy Division.

The three titles—each of which are in English and directed by filmmaker Peter West—are now available to members of IndieFlix and can be accessed at indieflix.com. The films are also available for purchase through Chihuly Workshop at chihuly.com/shop/publishing/dvds.
