Saturn Yellow Basket

2022 Chihuly Studio Edition

Saturn Yellow Basket

5 x 11 x 10½"

In 1977, Dale Chihuly set out to interpret in glass the essence of softly slumping and aging fiber baskets woven by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. “Like an Indian youth at the climax of his spirit quest, he felt some inexplicable connection with the baskets and through them with something universal,” says Northwest historian Murray Morgan.

The Saturn Yellow Basket Studio Edition captures Chihuly’s original vision for this body of work and incorporates his sensibility in grouping individual elements together to emphasize the visual experience. Each of its three vessels presents a honey-yellow hue contrasted by a dark oxblood red lip wrap that winds sinuously along the surface and accentuates the sculpture’s dimensional presence.

Small blemishes or imperfections in the glass are part of the glass blowing process and add to the individual characteristics of each piece.

“I wanted to concentrate on using the fire from the furnace as well as centrifugal force and gravity. This meant letting glass find its own form.”
