Pomegranate Persian

2015 Chihuly Workshop Studio Edition

Pomegranate Persian

7½ x 10 x 9½"

With exquisite balance of color, light, and form, the Pomegranate Persian is a classic example of this transcendent series.

The agile, open form enfolds an eccentric element that curls out while drawing the eye into the composition’s complex interior. Two tonal body wraps combine to create concentric bands of rich red, deepening to ruby on the graceful ribbing that emphasizes the sculpture’s supple motion and a mesmerizing interplay of light and dark. The skillfully applied sapphire blue lip wrap articulates the expressive lines recurrent in Chihuly’s classic Persian form.

Small blemishes or imperfections in the glass are part of the glass blowing process and add to the individual characteristics of each piece.

Additional Insights

The Persians, one of Chihuly’s most celebrated series, eloquently captures the artist’s love of color and the medium’s transmission of light in their daring and energetic forms.

Art historian Tina Oldknow observes,“The Persians are only one expression of the underlying, purely abstract and formal objective of his work: the exploration of form and the glass itself as a vehicle for color, and the orchestration of color to create transformational environments.”
